The One About Jesus and Government

Roman coin being the image of Tiberius Caesar
“This engraving—who does it look like? And whose name is on it?”

They said, “Caesar.”

“Then give Caesar what is his, and give God what is his.” Matthew 22:20-21 (The Message)

The Roman Empire may not have been the most oppressive government that has ever existed but by American standards, it was pretty bad.

The J-Word Part 2

Just because you didn’t get what you want doesn’t mean that you are “persecuted”. It means you can’t have everything. Robert Cargill

I was outraged when I heard that Louie Giglio had withdrawn his acceptance to deliver the benediction at the Presidential inauguration after protest from pro-homosexual groups. In his letter to the White House, Giglio stated that “Neither I, nor our team, feel it best serves the core message and goals we are seeking to accomplish to be in a fight on an issue not of our choosing, thus I respectfully withdraw my acceptance of the President’s invitation.”

Is another evangelical going to back down from participation in the public arena? Did anti-Christian bigots succeed in silencing even an apolitical pastor like Giglio? Should we get used to the idea that we are second class citizens in this “Christian nation” in which we live?

Yes. Yes. And yes.

It is a challenge coming up a lesson that is simple enough for them to understand and short enough to hold their attention for even a few minutes. Since it is January, we talked about snowflakes (a rare sight in Mississippi) and the Creator God who makes both snow and wiggly, three year olds. (more…)
