time and chance

Filed under: Old Testament — Tags: — Karen @ 4:04 am

I have seen something else under the sun:
The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong,
nor does food come to the wise
or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned;
but time and chance happen to them all.
Ecclesiastes 9:11 (NIV)

Ecclesiastes is not a happy read. Tradition says that Solomon wrote this portion of scripture at the end of his life. The tone is dark and bitter and sad. It has the musty odor of nursing homes and sick beds. Proverbs scattered throughout the book sound like advice that has been repeated too often by a forgetful old man.

Why did God allow this dreary monologue to be included in the OT canon? The Bible tells us the truth about ourselves and our condition. Old age is frequently accompanied by depression. Enthusiasm for life is replaced by worry.

As my own life moves into middle years, will I become a person who is overwhelmed and embittered by circumstances? Or will I create a reality of my own where there is no sadness or uncertainty? How do I find that ying/yang balance between the two extremes?

Respect and obey God – This is what life is all about. Ecclesiastes 12:13
