“Respect your father and mother, and you will live a long and successful life in the land I am giving you.” Deut 5:16 (Contemporary English Version)

If you are faced with a fifth commandment issue and decide that, in your very unique situation, you are justified in disobeying mom and dad then be prepared for the consequences. Even if you are 100% correct. Even if angels in heaven are turning cartwheels because you made such a brave decision. There will be consequences. Probably negative. (more…)

“Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.” Deut 5:16 (NKJV)

Since there is a hierarchy to the Ten Commandments, Christians are obligated to obey God’s Law above all else. When it comes to Deut 5:16, Christian teens and young adults sometimes look for a spiritual reason to disregard their parents’ authority. (more…)

“Respect your father and mother—God, your God, commands it! You’ll have a long life; the land that God is giving you will treat you well.” Deut 5:16 (The Message)

This is a tough one for a lot of young people. We’re not just talking about the selfish me-ism of teen culture. I have a curfew, how unfair. Dad won’t let me borrow the car, what a jerk! Blah, blah, blah. For Christians who are living under the authority of agnostic/atheistic parents, Deut 5:16 can seem impossible. Even in Christian homes, people make poor decisions. Mom and dad are just as selfish and sinful as the rest of humanity. (more…)
